A GOVAN councillor has called for a change in the law to tackle sectarian violence following Friday's riots.

Baillie John Kane said innocent constituents have had their property trashed and have been left "horrified" after trouble erupted on their streets around 7.30pm.

The Labour councillor said last night that "thugs in balaclavas" were "very sadly" responsible for rising tension around today's Old Firm game.

He said: "Last night's scenes were more akin to what you may see in another part of the UK. It was horrible, and shameful.

" Those who took part in it have ratcheted up tension around tomorrow's football game, which is a great shame. Friday night was not about football supporters, it was about something different, and to try and marry it into the game is very sad.

"To those that took part in the events, I sincerely hope that the police are able to identify you and take action. To come along and have a counter demonstration like a bunch of thugs wearing balaclavas, that's not something we want to see on our streets.

He added: I have spoken to a number of constituents this morning, they're horrified. Absolutely horrified.

"There was a fair bit of collateral damage - cars and property attacked, belonging to innocent people with nothing to do with this.

"Should we be doing anything to stop counter protests? We are living in a democratic country, and people have got a right to protest. What they don't have a right to do is turn it into a riot or a rammy.

"We can say 'enough is enough' but I believe now we may have to look at changing the law perhaps, around parades or marches. This is sensitive, and there are lots of groups who lawfully take part in marches with no problem."
