34 people are feared dead after a boat fire just off the Californian coast. 

The blaze is thought to have broken out near Santa Cruz Island just off of Los Angeles at around 4am. 

US media reports that five crew members have managed to escape with the rest being 'unaccounted for'

US Coast Guard Los Angeles on large boat in distress with more than 30 people on board near Santa Cruz Island.

Ventura County officials say multiple people have died but the US Coast Guard is yet to confirm fatalities.

US Coast Guard officials said: "The vessel was reported as being on fire." A "group of crew members has been rescued" and "efforts continue to evacuate the remaining passengers."
