Scotland boss Steve Clarke hinted at a number of changes from Friday night's defeat against Russia.

No wonder.

His toothless, scared side bombed at Hampden Park in a 2-1 loss - despite taking an early lead through John McGinn.

Celtic's in-form playmaker Ryan Christie was left out the starting lineup despite starring for the best club in the country at this moment.

Mark Hendry: Scotland the Brave showing in Belgium loss would be better than pathetic Russia re-run

He did come off the bench and make as much of an impact as he could, albeit it wasn't enough to help his country pull themselves back from the brink.

Will he start this evening? Will Oli McBurnie be allowed to continue in the lone striker's role?

Here we delve into Steve Clarke's options and pick our XI to square-off against Belgium in Group I's do-or-die clash.

David Marshall

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Marshall kept Scotland from a hiding on Friday evening.

The former Celtic stopper managed three or four brilliant - and important - saves which kept the score down.

Hardly a glowing recommendation that his main job was to prevent a kicking, but he played well and will start again this evening.

Stephen O'Donnell

Kilmarnock right-back O'Donnell held his hands up after Friday's game and accepted responsibility for the second goal, citing a lack of defensive awareness for losing his man.

Boss Clarke worked with O'Donnell at Killie and will know how to get a reaction - if he even needs to say anything.

Liam Cooper

Another player who didn't have the best of times against Russia.

Artem Dzyuba had him on toast but it was his Scotland debut, after all.

He won't be expecting anything easier from the likes of Romelu Lukaku, but with Grant Hanley injured it looks like the boss may have no choice but to stick with his centre-halves.

Charlie Mulgrew

As mentioned previously, Norwich City star Hanley remains out so Mulgrew looks likely to start.

One thing the defender will need to cut out this evening is his apparent need to give the ball away at every opportunity.

A huge downfall against Russia was Mulgrew's desire to hoof the ball up the pitch to McBurnie who, unfortunately, was unable to control it or hold it up.

Hopefully Clarke has instructed him to at least try and keep ball.

Andy Robertson

Liverpool's first choice left-back explained after Friday's loss that the opening goal seemed to terrify the players.

Matthew Lindsay: Scotland can still secure a Euro 2020 spot - but only through the play-offs

Not what you're looking for after a crunch game, really.

In fairness, though, Robbo's honesty was refreshing and at least it was nice to hear zero excuses.

At the end of the day, he's Scotland best player and needs to play.

James Forrest

Celtic's winger has started the season well, albeit tailed off slightly against Rangers.

He didn't show up against Russia either.

The problem with dropping a star of Forrest's quality is that he can perform at any given moment and, for Scotland, appears to be too important a player to leave out.

We'll just have to hope he finds his feet again this evening.

John McGinn

Another player who admitted he didn't have his best day against the Russians.

Scotland star John McGinn would wipe first international goal from career slate for Russian do-over

He's been outstanding for Aston Villa this season so far and did score the opener in our Group I game at Hampden last week.

He's full of running and willing to stick the boot in, no matter the opposition.

I reckon we'll need him tonight.

Callum McGregor

Celtic's main middle man.

When he plays, the Hoops do - and Scotland, too.

He always seems to show up in big games and I'd wager he may drop a bit deeper this evening to accommodate other players who'll want to get forward.

Ryan Fraser

Bournemouth's tricky winger has it in him to run at - and beat - anyone on his game.

Last season there was talk of interest from Arsenal before Eddie Howe opted to keep him at the Cherries.

If he can get going early, he could be a big player for us tonight.

Ryan Christie

He tried to change the game on his own last weekend, and didn't look too far away from doing so.

Scotland vs Belgium: Steve Clarke's side 'one of worst in history', claims Red Devils legend

Had a couple wee things went his way it could've been a really big tactical masterclass from his boss.

Unfortunately it was too little, too late, but the lad is a quality player and is Scottish football's top star at this moment.

He needs to play.

Matt Phillips

Perhaps not an out-and-out striker, but he might be exactly what Scotland need this evening.

Put it this way, we had an out-and-out striker playing against Russia but that didn't do us any good.

Phillips is a strong, quick player who can hold the ball up well for club and country.

It'll be a thankless task again for the Scots, but for me, Phillips is a better option than Oli McBurnie.
