Network Rail has successfully completed its most recent stage of the redevelopment project at Queen Street station almost a day ahead of schedule.

The four-week-long project dedicated to lengthening platforms four and five at the station is officially finished after being expected to take until Monday.

The new infrastructure will allow for service to go ahead tomorrow as planned at Scotland’s third busiest station.

The platforms had been temporarily closed since September 16 to allow for the 26-meter extensions to be fitted.

It involved a process of removing 2000 tonnes of material, installing 100 meters of platform walls, 200 meters of new track being connected to the existing infrastructure, and a 50 meter extension of the overhead powerlines.

This follows the extension of platforms two and three earlier this summer.

Kevin McClelland, route delivery director for capital delivery, said: “Our team has worked around-the-clock to complete this vital element of the redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street as quickly as possible.

“Extending the platforms will allow longer electric trains to use them, meaning more seats for passengers.

“We appreciate the understanding customers have shown over the last four weeks while we have been completing this enhancement to their station.”
