Police appeal over death of John Connelly from Milton three months on

Police Scotland still doesn't know how the 28-year-old, from Cathay Street, died three months on from when he was recovered from the water at Spiers Wharf on Monday, July 22.  The force is appealing to the public again for any information that will help them find out why he died and why he was found in the canal at Spiers Warf.

John was reported missing by his family when he didn’t return home from a day out with his friend in Glasgow City Centre on Monday,  July 15. His body was recovered from the water at Speirs Wharf in Glasgow a week later.

He had injuries to his head and body, and much of the investigation so far has focused on a possible altercation that happened in an underpass in the city centre prior to John's death.

Detective Inspector John Morrison, Maryhill CID, said: "John’s family are still understandably devastated by his death and it is made all the harder by not knowing what happened to him.

“For the past three months they have been clinging to the hope that someone will come forward with the information they, and indeed we, need to find out why John died, how he came to be in the canal and what caused the injuries to his head and body.

“We know he was in the city with his pal but that they had separated when heading home for the night. Around 10 pm John is seen walking alone in Buchanan Street past Buchanan Galleries and the bus station then on to Dundasvale Court and into the underpass at Garscube Road leading to Speirs Wharf in the Cowcaddens area around 10.20 pm.

“One line of enquiry is that he was involved in some sort of altercation at the underpass but that has still to be confirmed. So if you were in that area at that time, then please let us know. Maybe you saw a disturbance, or indeed people hanging about the area."

He added: “John was wearing a black Adidas hooded top, with white stripes down the sleeves, black jogging trousers and royal blue coloured Nike trainers.

“John’s family deserve to know what happened to him and your information could prove vital to our investigation. You may not realise that what you saw or know is significant but let us be the judge of that.

“Garscube Road at Speirs Wharf is a popular route used by runners, dog walkers and skateboarders and I’m appealing to anyone who uses this route to think back and consider if they saw anything.”
