SHE is a cultural icon who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, has topped the charts in six different decades and also has an Academy Award under her belt. Now 73, Cher is bringing her tour to Scotland.
Didn’t she do a farewell tour already?
The 73-year-old superstar last performed in the UK in 2004 on her “Farewell Tour” that included a date in Glasgow, but she’s back on the road with her “Here We Go Again” global tour, performing across the UK, including at the SSE Hydro.
She’s been doing this a while?
California born Cherilyn Sarkisian - daughter of a truck driver father and actress mother - dropped out of high school at 16 to study acting and work as a dancer. She met US singer-songwriter and producer, Sonny Bono, at 16 and they began to work together, before eventually marrying in 1969.
They were a smash hit duo?
They shot to fame in 1965 with two hit songs, Baby Don’t Go and I Got You Babe, performing together for a decade. They had two top ten TV shows in America - The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Show - but split up in 1972, although still appeared married on screen.
Cher’s a record breaker?
She holds the UK Record for the biggest selling single of all time by a female artist for Believe. The song spent seven weeks at number one in 1998 and has sold almost 2 million copies so far.
She was a pioneer of Auto-Tune?
On Believe, her use of technology to alter her voice was hugely controversial at the time, but has become widely used ever since.
She could have been Louise?
Cher knocked back the role in Thelma & Louise in 1991 to appear in Mermaids alongside Bob Hoskins. Geena Davis ultimately played the part.
But she struck gold with her other roles?
Nominated for an Academy Award twice - in 1983 for Silkwood and in 1987 for Moonstruck, with the latter snagging her the Oscar.
She has a new album out?
Her tour includes hits from her huge repertoire, as well as songs from her Dancing Queen Abba tribute album, released in the wake of her appearance in the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again movie last year.
She’s almost an ‘EGOT’?
She won an Emmy for a recording of her Farewell Tour in 2003, a Grammy for best dance recording for Believe in 2000 and with her best actress Oscar for Moonstruck in the bag, she only has a Tony Award to win to get her into the exclusive EGOT club. Presently, only 15 people have one an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Turning back time?
Her smash hit 1989 song If I Could Turn Back Time, was regarded as a comeback after a dip in her solo career. The video proved controversial and was initially banned by MTV as it featured Cher on board the battleship USS Missouri strutting around in a fishnet body stocking and not a lot else.
She would like to turn back time?
Referring to the ageing process, she has said she just doesn’t “know how to accept it”, adding: “I look in the mirror and I see this old lady looking back at me. And I have no idea how she got there!”
She's not a huge fan?
Cher has said: "I've never really been in love with Cher. She's all right, but I'm - it's like, I'm not a huge fan."
