An air ambulance has been called after a child was struck by a car in North Ayrshire.

Emergency services have raced to Dalry Road in Kilwinning to attend to the schoolgirl.

Police closed the road to traffic while crews dealt with the incident.

The Scottish Ambulance Service’s helicopter landed at Kilwinning Academy and transferred the child to Southern General in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Police were called at around 3.30pm to Dalry Road near to Kilwinning Academy for a crash involving a car and a child.

"The child is being treated at the scene and there are no further details of injuries at this stage.

"The road is closed in both directions."
