A haul of Roman and medieval treasure worth more than £1,500 has been stolen from a train in Edinburgh - after the owner mistakenly left it on board.

Transport officers have launched a probe after a red Aldi bag containing the £500 ring and £1,000 brooch disappeared from a carriage when it arrived at Waverley station last month.

It is understood the owner left the items on the service after disembarking at Durham, however they were not handed in to lost property after the journey.

The ring, which features the inscription 'O Mi Hart is Yovrs,' is believed to date from the mid to post-medieval period, while the brooch is believed to date from the late Roman period.

British Transport Police said the valuables are now being presumed stolen.

It is understood they would have been taken between the evening of Friday, October 4 and 12.30am on Saturday, October 5.
