PROTESTERS are set to descend on fast-food chain Subway today to fight against mistreatment of animals used in the company’s sandwiches.
Open Cages, an animal rights activism group, has organised the protest after the sandwich shop failed to answer calls from animal rights campaigners to improve the welfare of chickens used for meat in their shops and for what they describe as “misleading” the public about the ethics of their chicken farms.
Open Cages co-founder, Karri Heikkinen, said: “Subway is seriously misleading the Scottish people on animal welfare.
“The conditions Subway chickens live in are horrific, filthy and outdated, and not ‘high standard’ as the business claims.”
“With competitor giants like KFC committing to better welfare, there is no excuse for Subway to continue allowing such suffering.
“We are therefore forced to inform Subway customers directly through the launch of this campaign.”
The group will protest outside Subway on Argyle Street in the city centre, while informing customers about the conditions the animals used by Subway face.
