STEVEN GERRARD insists he is at Ibrox for the long haul as he gets set to commit his future to Rangers and sign a new deal in the coming days.

The 39-year-old is less than halfway through the four-year contract he penned last summer as he made the move from Liverpool to begin his managerial career.

But his significant impact on and off the park in Glasgow has earned the Reds legend an extension to those terms that will now tie him to the Light Blues until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Gerrard said: "I'm happy here. I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm as hungry as ever to make it a success.

"The talks are really positive and at the moment we're not too far away.

"The club came to me around ten days ago and it's been pretty straightforward.

"I asked for it to be kept quiet before the final and this European game because it's not really important. The results are more important.

"We'll pick it up after Thursday's game. But there's nothing to really talk about - because I want to stay and they want to keep me so it's pretty simple.

"That (only being here for a couple of years) wasn’t in my thinking, it has been in the thinking of the majority of everyone else - ‘Oh, Rangers is a stepping stone’ or ‘He’s just going there to rehearse for something else.’ It’s a load of nonsense - I’ve come here as this is a big opportunity for me and I have no plans of going anywhere else.

"If I had I wouldn’t have signed a new deal because I have two and a bit years left. I didn’t think about extending or a new contract until the club approached me and I certainly wouldn’t turn that down because I’m really enjoying it and I really appreciate this role and being here."

Gerrard will look to lead Rangers into the Europa League knockout rounds tonight when Rangers host Young Boys at Ibrox.

Midfielder Steven Davis will be absent after missing the defeat to Celtic on Sunday and Filip Helander could be out for an extended spell. The Swede has had a scan on a foot injury picked up at Hampden and will continued to be assessed.
