STEVEN GERRARD is confident there will be no Hampden hangover for Alfredo Morelos as he looks to fire Rangers into the Europa League last 32.

The striker endured a frustrating afternoon on Sunday as he missed a handful of chances - including a second half penalty - during the Betfred Cup final defeat to Celtic.

Morelos was denied on several occasions by Fraser Forster as the keeper turned in a Man of the Match winning display to earn Neil Lennon’s side their tenth successive trophy.

But boss Gerrard is sure his 25-goal forward won’t let his disappointment get the better of him when he lines up against Young Boys tonight.

Gerrard said: “He has been Alfredo. He’s been good in training in the last few days and bubbly and he’s been chirpy. He seems like he’s over it which is good because we need him to be over it. He’s the reason why we’ve got a huge, huge chance to top the group in a different competition.

“He’s one of our main players - if we are to have our day he’ll be a big part of it.

“You don’t want one of you main players moping around and feeling sorry for himself. And I haven’t seen any of that, I’ll be honest with you.

“I’ve seen people clearly upset and down because we never got the result we all wanted. Of course, I’ve seen that.

“But since our day off, coming in on Tuesday morning, there has been no sign of anyone feeling sorry for themselves which is good.”

The missed chances from Morelos were to prove costly for Rangers as Christopher Jullien netted the only goal of the game to condemn Gerrard’s side to a defeat that their performance on the day didn’t merit.

The Colombian has yet to score in an Old Firm encounter but Gerrard was pleased with his all-round game on Sunday.

Gerrard said: “I don’t think he’ll ever hide, he’s not that type of player. He wants the responsibility. Look, he met a keeper who put in a world class performance. That doesn’t happen every game. Alfredo did everything he could for his team so I think it would be very unfair if I was to criticise him.

“He was unplayable at times, was getting shots off, and everything we wanted our nine to do on the day he carried it out. Of course, the penalty miss is huge because it completely swings the whole game.

“But a penalty is a penalty - people miss them and people score them.

“I think it’s probably a combination of things [why he hasn’t scored against Celtic].

“One, it’s the toughest challenge in the league playing against the best defenders and best goalkeepers more often than not.

“It’s the most high-profile game so that comes with extra nerves and responsibilities.

“He’s probably trying too hard as the run has gone on but one thing is for sure, if he keeps doing what he’s doing then it will turn at some point. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t.”

Captain James Tavernier handed over the ball to Morelos as Rangers switched their spot-kick takers. Time will tell if it changes again, though.

“Wait and see,” Gerrard said when asked if Morelos would remain on penalty duty. “Listen, the penalty thing we’re not going to hide from it.

“It’s up to me to try and find a solution. But there are people queuing. There are people desperate for it and there are people who have already pulled me. But I’ll make that decision when I need to.”
