Louise McCarthy, Actress

MY SCHOOL: I went to Notre Dame High, a public all-girls school just off Byres Road, from 1996 until 2001. I remember it had green tiles, right old-fashioned ones, and massive corridors. It smelled like carbolic soap.

FAVOURITE TEACHER: Mrs Hall, my PE teacher. She was just so much fun and energetic to be around. You felt you could chat to her about anything. She never judged and always took time out for her pupils.

SCHOOL DINNER, PACKED LUNCH OR HOME? I always had a packed lunch but I would buy a dinner ticket off Marlene Ferguson for 20p, because my mum’s lunches were rotten.

Sometimes she gave me water in an old Coke bottle and there was always a weird after taste. It was like drinking metal. My favourite thing at school dinners was chips with pakora sauce. That is a taste sensation.

BEST FRIEND: I always sat with my best pal Sarah Coyle, also known as Sadie, although she will hate me for telling you that. We are still pals to this day and our parents are friends too.

FAVOURITE SUBJECT: Definitely PE, because I loved sports, especially netball. Before I became an actor, I seriously thought about being a PE teacher.

I was pretty hyper when I was a kid, so I needed to expend a lot of energy. I played in the school netball team, which was amazing.

I also loved skiing – we went to the Bearsden Ski slopes once a week to race against other schools. I had a need for speed. (Probably still do, if my driving is anything to go by…) One year, we went on a school trip to Austria with Mrs Hall. She was really cool to be around.

LEAST FAVOURITE SUBJECT: My least favourite subject was probably Religious Education.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like the subject as such, it was just that no-one really took it very seriously, so we never got anything done.

Our teacher was Mrs Hughes, who probably hated us, because we really were very naughty in her class.

It was also the class we used to miss to go down the chippy for a pizza crunch supper. I would like to see Mrs Hughes and apologise for being such a wee rascal.

IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT SCHOOL IT WOULD BE… I don’t think I would change a thing. I had a ball.
