FURIOUS parents have hit out after the council failed to carry out repairs on a school heating system for four weeks.

The heating at Chirnsyde Primary School in Milton has been off since December 11 due to a fault.

Temporary Calor gas heaters have been set up around the school - but parents argue that the problem should have been fixed during the winter break.

Karen Higgins, 42, from Milton, who has two kids at the school, said: "As parents we did persevere with the school because it was coming up to Christmas and we thought they would have two weeks to fix the issue.

"We thought we would have come back to the heating having been fixed but that has not happened."

She added: "I was in the school on Monday and the fumes from the gas fires hit me.

"They are saying they are safe but my head was bursting and I was only in 10 minutes.

"Some parents are concerned about the kids health with the school using these heaters."

Another parent added: "Glasgow city Council have received a quote but have done nothing to get this fixed prior to Christmas. We were told that they are waiting on a part.

"The have provided calor gas fires but due to fumes windows need to be opened.

"We are getting no where with Glasgow City Council."

Glasgow Times:

The Glasgow Times understands that parents were last night given a letter addressing the issue.

The letter said: "You may be aware that the school heating system developed a problem in the run up to the end of term and while an assessment of the repairs was being carried out, portable heaters were delivered to the school for use in the short term.

"To reassure you, this is normal practice in these situations and a full risk assessment has been carried out by the council’s health and safety officers – the school is also issued with guidance and training for school staff to ensure the safe operation of the heaters."

Glasgow Times:

It continued: "As with most buildings the age of our school, before any work is carried out a full asbestos assessment requires to be carried out by specialist contractors before the repairs can start – unfortunately due to the festive holidays this has taken longer than normal.

"However, I’ve been assured by council officials that the work has been given top priority and the assessment was carried out today with repairs to be carried as soon as possible.

"We are fortunate that the weather has been very mild for this time of year and I would like to apologise for the fault and the slight delay to repairs that’s out with our control and will keep you updated with any additional information when I have it."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman added: "We apologise for this inconvenience and a letter has been sent home to families today to explain the reason for the delay to repairs and the next steps.”
