RAIL services running between Scotland and England were disrupted after a train station was shut down after a cash machine was blown up.

Trains have been had to bypass Berwick-upon-Tweed railway station after the explosion in which thieves stole cash. 

London North Eastern Railway - who manage the station - and earlier said the issues were "due to vandalism" stated that they do not expect any trains to stop at the station during the remainder of today.

Images from outside the station showed windows had been smashed, with glass on the pavement.

British Transport Police were called just before 3.50am after an explosive was used to blow up the machine.

A spokesman confirmed the raiders fled the scene. The station was shut and a bus replacement service was running.  

A police spokesman said: “A group are reported to have used an explosive substance to damage the cash machine and remove its contents.

“The suspects then fled the scene.

“Officers from BTP and Northumbria Police attended and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

The closure has disrupted CrossCountry service between Dundee, Glasgow Central, and Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, Plymouth and Penzance.

It has also affected LNER services between Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London Kings Cross

CrossCountry tickets will be accepted on LNER services between Edinburgh and Newcastle.

LNER tickets will be accepted on CrossCountry and TransPennine Express services between Edinburgh and Newcastle.
