With COVID-19 spreading across Scotland, events and gatherings have seen their status change to prevent further spreading of the disease.

However, while libraries and universities have closed their doors, questions have been asked about the status of nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools.

We have pulled everything together in a guide to make sure you know all the essentials regarding Scotland's education sector:

Are Scottish schools closed?

Nicola Sturgeon announced on Wednesday that all schools in Scotland would close by Monday morning.

That includes nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools.

A number of schools have already closed due to staff self-isolating or the emergence of positive cases of COVID-19 relating to pupils or staff.

The Herald:

When will schools reopen?

The First Minister said she could not promise schools would reopen before the summer holidays due to the current coronavirus situation. Summer holidays in Scotland generally begin in the first week of July.

What about SQA exams?

Thousands of school pupils are preparing to sit National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams in the coming weeks. With the schools closing, there is understandably a lot of questions surrounding whether or not these will take place.

At the moment, there is no information as to whether in-person examinations will take place, however, there are measures in place to support students.

If any candidate has suffered, for example bereavement or illness during exams, or has been self-isolating, schools and colleges will be able to inform the SQA of circumstances and submit alternative evidence of attainment demonstrated by the candidate.

This includes assignments from throughout the year.

The board are strongly advising candidates to sign up to MySQA to receive results.

How will my child continue learning if they aren't at school?

Most schools have begun to notify parents of their home-schooling plans. If your child's school has not yet reached out to you, it can be assumed they will do this in the coming days as they prepare to cease face-to-face teaching.

Most schools use GLOW, an online teaching system where teachers can communicate directly with pupils, assign homework and keep track of studies. Pupils will have individual log-in details which will be provided by schools.

Similarly, some schools use Google Classroom and Microsoft Online to carry out similar methods. Your child's school will communicate with you to advise their preferred system and respective log-in details.
