A Glasgow hairdresser has said it is safely prepared for re-opening and has set a provisional date for admitting clients.

Ellen Conlin, based on Hyndland Road in the city's West End, said the latest government updates had suggested businesses could re-open at the end of the month but said their June 30 timeline was 'subject to change'.

In response, a spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said hairdressers will not be permitted to re-open until phase three of the route map out of lockdown. According to reports the earliest this could come into play would be July 9.

Businesses operating in England have been given a possible re-opening date of July 4.

A statement on Ellen Conlin's website states: "The latest government update suggests that we may be able to open at the end of the month.

"We are keeping very close communications with the Hairdressing Council and the National Hairdressing & Beauty Federation who speak directly with the government.

"We can't wait to welcome all our clients back to the salon, but there's going to be some changes to the way we do things, and we want you to know that we have the safety and wellbeing of both our staff and customers as our priority.

"We will open from 9.30am - 730pm Tuesday - Friday and 9am - 6pm on a Saturday in an effort to accomodate everyone.

"Both clients and staff will be issued with PPE and 2 metre Social Distancing will be carried out in the salon at all times.

The salon said it has invested a significant amount of money to help ensure clients and staff are protected from Covid-19.

Ken Main, joint owner, said: “Instead of having 15 people in at one time, we will have five in, maybe even less in alternative seats.

“We have screens for the back wash so there is no contact splashes.

“We have 2m gaps on the floor and brushes and combs will need to be sanitised before and after every service as will dryers, as will seats, door handles, plugs.

“We will also be doing staggered appointments."

It is thought to be one of the first salons in Scotland to set a provisional date for re-opening.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said: "The route map states that hairdressers will be permitted to open in Phase 3, providing adequate distancing and hygiene measures are in place.

"At the current time, hairdressers should remain closed.”

A spokeswoman for the NHFB said: "In England it is still the proposed date of 4th July.

"There has been no other indication at this present time that the England date will be earlier, and we’ve not heard of any date as yet from the Scottish government."

Celebrity hair stylist Michael Van Clarke revealed his London Soho salon already has a 3,000 waitlist for when it re-opens in July.
