Tina Fey, actress and creator of the sitcom '30 Rock', has apologised for the use of blackface and urged that these episodes be removed from streaming sites.

The 50-year-old actress, along with co-creator Robert Carlock, has requested that four episodes featuring characters in blackface be taken down.

In a letter addressed to streaming platforms that currently host the series, the comedy writers “apologise for pain they have caused” and express hopes that “no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness.”

The note, as reported by Variety and Vulture, reads: “As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation.

“I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images.

“I thank NBCUniversal for honouring this request.”

Episodes have already started disappearing from certain streaming sites such as Amazon and Hulu, and will no longer be available on all sites by the end of the week.

Fey’s is the latest in a long line of celebrity apologies for performing in blackface, sparked by the Black Lives Matter protests happening worldwide and the murder of George Floyd.
