GLASGOW-based charities that help homeless people across the city have received much needed cash support from a supermarket.

Shelter Scotland, The Wheatley Foundation and Simon Community Scotland have all been given a share of Morrisons Foundation’s ‘Covid-19 Homeless Support Fund’.

Charities raised recent concerns that if someone does not have a permanent place to call home, it can be particularly difficult to self-isolate and maintain social distancing.

The supermarket has since provided grants of up to £10,000 to cover a wide variety of costs including outreach support for rough sleepers, and provision of essential items for services in hostels and shelters.

Hugh Hill, director of services and development at Simon Community Scotland, which received a grant of £8,000, said: “In the last few weeks we have supported hundreds of people off the streets and into a place where they can be safe and well.

“Our staff are working seven days a week to make this happen, and their work is made so much easier thanks to the support of the Morrisons Foundation helping us reach more people, fund clothing, food, toiletries and mobile phones so people can stay in touch during this anxious time.”

More than £560,000 has been awarded to 94 charities across the UK.
