GLASGOW’S Labour group are expected to announce a structural re-shuffle of their shadow cabinet next month in a bid to remove “ dead wood”.

Less than 28-days into their new roles, the group’s new management team has decided to make some changes with only three people including business manager - councillor Bill Butler anticipated to keep their original roles.

Labour has said that their leadership, councillor Malcolm Cunning and councillor Eva Murray are still in discussion with all group members to discuss how “best to utilise their collective skills and talents” with an official announcement only being made after all changes are presented to everyone.

But our source has said that an official statement is likely to be brought forward.

They said: “I would expect there to be an announcement made in the next few days as I can’t imagine Labour leader councillor Malcolm Cunning wanting to wait another month.

“The group meeting will probably be brought forward to allow the reshuffle to take place and for the new blood to take out the dead wood.”

It is understood that only two other members have kept their original titles including councillor Eva Murray, who has already become the depute Labour Leader and will remain the spokeswoman for climate change to shadow SNP councillor Anna Richardson.

Our source added: “This will allow Ms Murray to continue her work to address climate change and speak out on issues involving Glasgow roads, unemptied bins and overgrown parks.

“Councillor Martin Rhodes will also keep his title as the community’s spokesperson but apart from that it’s a full new team.”

Councillor Cecilia O’Lone is projected to become the new neighbourhoods and public realm convener to shadow councillor Alan Casey.

Speculation within the city council has hinted that other suspected changes include councillor Saqib Ahmed who will focus on equalities and human rights to shadow Jen Leyden, Robert Mooney will become the spokesman for workforce to shadow Michelle Fearns, Aileen McKenzie will shadow Chris Cunningham in education while Maggie McTernan will hold councillor Mhairi Hunter to account in health and social care.

Labour’s former depute leader councillor Archie Graham will become the spokesman for culture and sport to shadow SNP depute leader councillor David McDonald.

Councillor John Kane will become the treasurer to shadow councillor Ricky Bell while councillor Jane Morgan has been offered a new position in operational performance and strategy.

Our source added: “I am looking forward to the reshuffle within the Labour group and seeing councillors get their own brief and speak out about issues they are passionate about – something members don’t always feel comfortable doing.

“I hope to see more outreach to young people to try and get them more interested and involved in local politics. This is an exciting new time.”

When asked about the re-shuffle Labour said: “The new leadership team are still in discussion with all group members about how best to utilise their collective skills and talents.

“Nothing has yet been agreed, and any changes will only be announced after they have been presented to the Labour group.

“We will be in a position to update on that after the next scheduled meeting in October.”
