RESIDENTS in a Neilston street are up in arms over a decision by East Renfrewshire Council to turn one of the flats there into a homeless unit.

They claim the new tenant has been making their lives a misery and have reported him to the police for alleged theft and threatening behaviour.

The 34-year-old tenant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, moved into a ground floor apartment in Glen Avenue in March.

Five of the flats in the block are owned privately but the sixth belongs to the council and has been leased to the man.

One fed-up neighbour claims the council has refused to act on complaints and a request to move the tenant elsewhere.

Retired nurse Paul Moore, 53, told the Barrhead News: “Our main gripes are the behaviour of this man and the lack of action by the council.

“All of the flats in the block are privately owned except for this one flat.

“In the past, it was let out to other council tenants with no problems or issues but the council has now decided to turn it into a homeless unit without any prior consultation or notice.”

Mr Moore claims that, in March, the tenant raided a cellar he owns and took a number of items, including a printer, a power tool and a games console.

He also claims the man threatened his 24-year-old daughter Hannah earlier this month.

Mr Moore added: “We want him moved out of here because of all the trouble he is causing.

“The council is not taking any responsibility. Our question is simply this – what is it going to take to get rid of him?”

Mr Moore added that other Neilston residents have made complaints to the council about the tenant’s conduct.

“The council shouldn’t have moved this man into this building, as he is clearly not a suitable tenant,” said Mr Moore.

“Something has got to change. Things can’t go on like this.”

A police spokesperson confirmed that a 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with alleged incidents of theft and intimidating behaviour in Neilston.

East Renfrewshire Council said it will continue to work closely with the tenant concerned.

A spokeswoman told the Barrhead News: “We have reminded him about the conduct expected within council properties.

“Due to Covid-19 restrictions, court proceedings relating to tenancies are currently on hold. If any alternative temporary accommodation becomes available, then this would be explored with the tenant.”
