PLANS to build 1500 homes in Glasgow “must meet the needs” of the north east, a councillor has said. 

Proposals to transform land around Easterhouse have been drawn up which would see the creation of four new villages on the outskirts of the city. 

Developers are currently canvassing opinion on the Heatheryknowe site and say they new houses will have their own “distinct identity, sense of place, and history”.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly believes the plans could help the area “grow and prosper”, but he insisted the villages must be designed with the existing community in mind. 

Cllr Kelly, who represents the North East, said: “Easterhouse is an area with great potential for development and growth, with great natural amenities on its doorstep. 

“It is important that the needs of the local area are at the forefront of any plans though and that we do not create separate communities. 

“I would think that the local consultation will show that people want mixed developments and that public transport links, childcare and primary school provision are all high on their lists of things to be considered.”

The villages will be named after local farms and will include a nursery and nursing home.

Developers Manor Architects have said the site will provide connectivity links to the Seven Lochs Wetland Park, Maryston Woods and other surrounding areas of amenity space.

Cllr Kelly added: “Far too often we see housing developments built without due care to the needs of those that live in the existing community or those that move into the development but initial discussions with Manor Architects have been encouraging and I look forward to seeing Easterhouse grow and prosper.”

In a statement on their website, the developers wrote: “The development will provide various public amenity areas for outdoor recreational activity, whilst good quality footpath and cycle links will also be provided to help remove dependency on car use.

“The masterplan incorporates both nursery and nursing home facilities into the scheme, to allow residents from the area to potentially live their whole lives as part of one community.

“It will enable them to take ownership of their community and encourage support and integration from wider society.

“Site analysis has shown there are four pockets of land which are suitable for developments within the Heatheryknowe site and so the masterplan concept is to create four villages within the masterplan area.

“Each will have its own identity , sense of place and history. Each village takes its name from one of the farms which currently occupy the site.” 

Feedback from the community will be used in the design process and subsequent planning application to Glasgow City Council.
