NEARLY 20 workers at a dairy factory in North Lanarkshire have been placed into quarantine following an outbreak of Covid-19. 

A number of staff at the Müller plant, in Bellshill, are now self-isolating after seven employees contracted the virus. 

The company said that health protection teams had been notified as contact tracing was carried out to halt the spread of the bug.

A spokesman for Müller Milk & Ingredients said: "We confirm that 19 employees from our dairy in Bellshill are self-isolating, seven of whom have tested positive for Covid-19. 

“Health Protection Scotland has been informed and we would like to stress that our procedures for dealing with Covid-19 follow best practice as set down by the Health and Safety Executive.

“As a food production facility, we maintain a rigorous cleaning regime in normal times, with additional measures currently in place including deep cleaning before each shift.

 “It’s important to stress that fresh milk processing is highly automated, ensuring no risk to products and we do not expect any disruption to our supplies to customers.”
