OKAY, let’s imagine you’ve just been signed by Celtic or Rangers and you like your wine, what would you drink this Christmas?

I’ve tried a few Domaine Romanee Conti wines from Burgundy over the years but despite the four-figure price tags, I just don’t like them. The first-growth clarets are a different matter though. I’ve tried them all, several times over in fact, and each one is etched in my memory

I guess every footballer may have a stock of bubbly and there’s only one brand: Armand de Brignac, also known as the Ace of Spades, and yes, it’s definitely worth every penny of the near-£200 a bottle cost.

For me, the quality of a Champagne is measured by the mousse, and with the Ace of Spades you get bubbles so fine they feel like candy floss on your palate.

I think I’d also have to buy a few cases of Opus One from Napa with my signing-on fee by the way.

Opus is the ultimate expression of cabernet sauvignon and it delivers powerful, complex flavours as smoothly as a Rolls Royce Phantom on the M8.

Bread & Butter Cabernet, California

This is just gorgeous for the price with masses of blackcurrant fruits and a lovely toasty oak finish. It tastes like it should cost a lot more so snap it up before they figure it out.

Lat 42 Rioja

Rioja really is my thing so it has to be a special one to catch my palate these days and this one did just that. Warm plums, white pepper and vanilla all combine to create a cracking wine.
