BARRHEAD motorists are facing six months of disruption as two key routes through the town are closed for major upgrades.

Housebuilders Taylor Wimpey say the work in Springfield Road and Springhill Road, described as “significant,” will begin next month.

The upgrades are part of a multi-million pound development of the area that will include the construction of 316 homes.

Work is due to start on Monday, January 11, and will be completed in two stages, with local diversions in place for motorists.

Stage one will run for 12 weeks, with the intersection at Springfield Road and Springhill Road, known as 5-Ways Junction, being closed.

Stage two will run for a further 16 weeks, allowing Springhill Road and the 5-Ways Junction to reopen but with a section of Springfield Road remaining closed.

It’s expected that the last of the roadworks will be completed by August.

Taylor Wimpey say the upgrades are essential for the new housing development and will result in safer roads, pedestrian crossing points, improved road surfaces and better visibility.

Alison Henderson, special projects manager for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, told the Barrhead News: “We would like to apologise in advance for the inconvenience these local road closures and diversions are likely to cause.

“Please be assured that we will be working with our contractors to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and local diversion signage will provide clear alternatives for road users.

“Future updates on the progress of this project will be made via our website.”
Taylor Wimpey say the development of 316 homes will include low-cost properties to buy, as well as 24 council houses.

The company is also contributing £2million towards local community projects, including improvements at the Dams to Darnley Country Park, as part of an agreement with council chiefs.
