GLASGOW city council leader Susan Aitken has condemned Rangers' Scottish Premiership title celebrations saying fans have "put the whole city at risk".

She spoke out as police said 28 arrests were made, seven fines were issued and officers were attacked after crowds of fans gathered to celebrate Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership.

Large numbers of fans made their way to Glasgow's George Square and Ibrox after Rangers won their first title in ten years after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United.

Ms Aitken, an SNP Glasgow city councillor said that both Rangers and Police Scotland should review the events surrounding Sunday's public celebrations.

She tweeted: "Glaswegians are rightly appalled at the selfish and irresponsible behaviour of those who broke Covid rules to attend mass gatherings and cause damage.

"They’ve put the whole city at risk & there is no justification."

The Herald:

On Sunday, the council leader hit out at claims football fans are being "allowed" to gather.

She said: "No one’s allowing it, this is not an organised event. Some fans have chosen to break the rules and go to George Square, the First Minister is rightly asking them not to do so.

"It’s a matter for the police to enforce lockdown restrictions and they have officers on the scene."

In a tweet, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon congratulated Rangers on the title win, but criticised the scenes.

She said: "Gathering in crowds just now risks lives, and could delay exit from lockdown for everyone else."

"If those gathering care at all about the safety of others & the country, they will go home," she said.

In a later tweet she said: "I share folks' anger at this."

She added it was "infuriating and disgraceful" to see the crowds "risk our progress" after everyone complying with lockdown rules has made "so many sacrifices".
