First woman of colour elected to Holyrood as Kaukab Stewart holds Kelvin for SNP

She becomes the first woman from an ethnic minority to be elected to Holyrood and takes over from Sandra White, who previously took the seat from Labour, and who had been a Glasgow MSP since 1999.

Stewart also stood in that first Holyrood election, losing to Scotland’s first, First Minister, Donald Dewar, in Anniesland.

The Glasgow Kelvin seat had the narrowest majority in Glasgow and was keenly contested by both the Greens and Labour.

In the end, Stewart took the seat by a majority of more than 5000, with 14,535 votes to her nearest challenger, Patrick Harvie of the Greens with 9077 votes.

Labour was in third place with Pam Duncan-Glancy winning 8605 votes and Grahame Cannell of the Conservatives in fourth on 2850 votes ahead of David McKenzie of the LibDems in fifth place with 977 votes.

After the declaration Stewart said she was proudto be elected in “one of the most diverse vibrant communities, in Kelvin. “

She added: “It is an honour to be elected as the first woman of colour to be elected to the Scottish Parliament. To all the women and girls of colour the Scottish Parliament belongs to you to. So, while I may be ethe first, I won’t be the last.

“I cannot wait to start work helping Scotland through the pandemic and working to help Scotland achieve its independence.”
