THE PEOPLE of Glasgow showed solidarity to Palestine yesterday evening during a protest to save the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

"Hundreds" of Glaswegians gathered at George Square to hold a socially distanced demonstration that called on an end to violence against the Palestinian community.

A sea of Palestine flags flew across the city centre as banners that read 'Save Shekih Jarrah' and 'Fight Racism Fight Imperialism' were held by campaigners.

It comes after Israeli police clashed with Palestinian protesters outside Jerusalem's Old City - just outside the city - during the holiest night of Ramadan.

The violence came after police blocked busloads of pilgrims headed to Jerusalem for prayer at Islam's third holiest site.

Police defended the brutality as security moves, but these were seen as provocations by Muslims who accuse Israel of threatening their freedom of worship.

It is understood that more than 200 Palestinians were wounded in clashes at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and elsewhere in Jerusalem.

Friends of Al-Aqsa have since been asking people to write to their local MPs asking them to up uphold British and international law. Campaigners are calling for the UK Government to release a strong statement condemning Israeli violations.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon condemned the attacks as "utterly indefensible" while she called for Isreal to "heed calls to halt the violence immediately".

She said: "Attacking a place of worship at any time is reprehensible, but attacking a mosque during Ramadan is utterly indefensible.

"It is also a violation of international law. Israel should heed calls to halt the violence immediately."
