“THE 1990s was an extraordinary time to be modelling,” German supermodel Claudia Schiffer believes. In her new book Captivate! Fashion Photography from the 90s she attempts to explain why with the aid of extensive photography from the era and a glimpse into her own private archives.

Coinciding with an exhibition in Dusseldorf, the book looks at the faces of the era and the men and women behind those faces; the photographers, art directors and hair and make-up artists who all helped to make the fantasy real.

The result was images such as this, a bold graphic shot of Naomi Campbell wearing Geoffrey Beene, as captured by the late, great Peter Lindbergh for American Vogue.

Lindbergh reminded everyone of the power of monochrome “at a time when pop culture was a rainbow of saturated brights,” Schiffer notes in Captivate! The result, she points out, is a photograph that “seizes upon the sharp bite of black and white.”
