SCOTLAND head coach Pedro Martinez Losa says he hopes his players will eventually experience similar Hampden atmospheres to the one which helped Steve Clarke's side beat Israel earlier this month.

His team play their third 2023 World Cup qualifying game against Hungary at the national stadium on Friday night. With top seeds Spain not in action, a win will put his side top of the group with nine points from nine.

“The responsibility is ours to do something special and connect with the people,” Martinez Losa said. “We have to use the energy of the last match at Hampden with the men – it was absolutely incredible.

“We would like to replicate this scenario where we can also bring to the fans the same emotion and feeling.”

The former Rayo Vallecano, Arsenal and Bordeaux head coach is able to call on a number of players who were injured for 2-0 win against Hungary in Budapest last month and the subsequent 7-1 defeat of the Faroe Islands at Hampden.

They include Manchester City midfielder Caroline Weir and West Ham winger Lisa Evans, with Martinez Losa saying he plans to use Weir in a more advanced position than was often the case under his predecessor Shelley Kerr.

“For me Caroline is a proper No 10,” the Spaniard said. “She can do special things in the final third. She can shoot from long distance, she's got great vision and understanding of the game.”

Martinez Losa expects Hungary to be an improved side, despite losing 7-0 at home to Spain four days after Scotland beat them last month.

“I'm sure Hungary will not be happy after losing the two matches and I think they will improve a lot,” he said. “They will be working hard to get better and I have seen scenarios where they have been really dangerous in other competitive games.”
