GLASGOW Life has now revealed the much-loved Christmas lights switch on is cancelled for this year.

The popular George Square event is one of the most important in the city calendar.

Bosses said the requirement for people to show vaccine passports would mean the queues to enter George Square would be longer than the switch-on itself.

Usually the event takes around 25 minutes.

They added it was "massively over-subscribed" with most people not able to get tickets.

And so the festive celebration will now be virtual, as it was last year due to the pandemic.

In 2020 the lights switch on was filmed and shown live online from inside Glasgow City Chambers.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Loves Christmas said: “There will be a virtual Christmas lights switch-on moment.

"The Christmas Lights switch-on event was always massively over-subscribed with the vast majority of people unable to get tickets.

"Covid protection guidance would mean anyone attending would need to provide evidence of double vaccination making the process of getting into the event as long as the event itself."

As told in the Glasgow Times last week, a light show on the City Chambers will be extended to other buildings around the city centre.

The light shows are part of the Love Glasgow This Christmas campaign and will see lights projected on to Buchanan Galleries and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Sauchiehall Street and at the Buck’s Head Building at the St Enoch Centre on Argyle Street.

The spokesman added: "Instead, more buildings in the city centre are being illuminated throughout December allowing everyone the chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere of Glasgow as much as they want, soaking up the vibrant culture, nightlife, entertainment and retail Glasgow has to offer and supporting businesses during the crucial festive period.”
