There have been repeated laments so far this season about the lack of squad depth at Celtic yet numerically now there are too many players for Ange Postecoglou to accommodate.

The early signings of Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Yasuke Ideguchi suggests a deviation of form from a club who have made something of a habit out of last-minute calls before the curtain has come down on the window.

And while there is not like for like in terms of quality within the current squad there are certainly ample bodies at the minute. Which would suggest that if any other business is to be done over the next few weeks that there will be a few in there who are liable to make their way out of the club.

Boli Bolingoli was not expected to be sighted again in a Celtic shirt after last season’s indiscretions and while he has featured sporadically, the chances are that a move away from Glasgow would be in the best interests of both parties.

The same would apply, too, to goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas. The Greek stopper came in from the cold before the break with Joe Hart and Scott Bain out but with Hart the clear first-choice goalkeeper it makes sense for Celtic to free him off of the wage bill.

Striker Albian Ajeti is in a similar position having never looked entirely settled since his arrival at the club while his fellow forward, Leigh Griffiths, has not hit the heights expected of him when he moved on loan to Dundee this summer.

Out of contract at the end of the season, it could be that there are moves by the Dens Park side to make the loan permanent although there would be question marks over whether Griffiths has had enough of an impact to warrant a full-time switch.

Certainly, though, there has been a statement of intent in their willingness to conclude deals as swiftly as possible, all the more so when consideration is given to Postecoglou’s frustrations in the summer when he suggested that he “hadn’t done a good enough job convincing people we need to bring people in.”

Reinforcements have arrived and have a few weeks now to bed in ahead of the latter half of the season as Celtic look to make up a six-point deficit in the race for the title.

Both Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers have made positive impressions in their loan deals to date although it remains to be seen if either agrees permanent terms now.

It would be in Celtic’s best interests to offer two players who have had nomadic careers until now a home yet the feeling prevails that both may wish to assess their options at the end of the season.

It would do Celtic little harm, however, to give them something to think about.
