WORK is progressing on a highly anticipated homeware store in the city’s West End.

After a lengthy four-year wait to break ground, the past 12 months have seen a flurry of activity at the popular Great Western Retail Park, meaning The Range will finally be set to welcome customers later this year.

As previously reported, work began on the store last January with the aim of doors finally opening at the end of last year.

It was then hoped the store would open early this year, with developers Kier Property saying the shop would bring “long-overdue investment” to the area.

After a long process to get started, residents praised the beginning of work at the site for the 53,000sq ft unit.

The home, garden and leisure retailer, which also has stores in London Road, Linwood and Greenock, will be the latest in a series of new additions to the retail park.

In recent years, a number of retail giants have joined the Allerdyce Road development.

McDonald’s, Starbucks and KFC joined the likes of B&Q, Sainsbury’s and B&M.

Community leaders have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new store, which was first earmarked for the site in 2017.

It’s expected the popular chain will bring a number of jobs to the area, as well as providing a boost to the park’s economy after almost two years of tough coronavirus restrictions.

However, it’s not yet known when the site will finally open its doors to the public.

The Range bosses have remained tight-lipped over the future opening date.

Although Kier Property chiefs said plans would be revealed in the coming weeks as construction nears completion.

Photographs taken of the site show much of the building has already been erected with new signage in place and a number of staff on site around the clock.

Leigh Thomas, managing director for Kier Property, said: “Our proposals for this site will deliver long-overdue investment for the Drumchapel area.

“Creating much needed jobs and bringing new brands to the retail park when it opens in early 2022.”
