AN AYR woman has been fined for careless driving after she knocked over a man in his 80s in the town.

Wendy Kirkland, 62, appeared in court for sentencing last month after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention in the town’s Broomfield Road on November 15, 2021.

Kirkland, 62, turned right too close to the corner when it was unsafe to do so, before colliding with the pedestrian, to his severe injury.

She had pleaded guilty by letter to the offence at an earlier date.

The procurator fiscal depute told last week’s hearing: “

Wendy Kirkland pleaded guilty by letter to driving without due care and attention Broomfield Road Ayr on November 15 2021 when she turned right too close to the corner when it was unsafe to do so.

She then collided with the man to his severe injury.

When she appeared in Ayr Sheriff Court for sentencing the Procurator Fiscal depute said: “At 8.45am Mrs Kirkland was in her car. There was roadworks at this time.

“The accused made a right turn on Broomfields Road onto Monument Road, cutting the corner and hitting the man.

“Police attended and spoke to him and he was conveyed to hospital.

“She was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

The court heard the pedestrian suffered a fractured rib as a result of the accident.

Kirkland’s defence solicitor said: “She is a 62-year-old lady and never had so much as a penalty point.

“She is being even more careful now than ever before.”

Sheriff Shirley Foran fined Kirkland, of Forehill Road, £300, discounted from £450.

She also put five penalty points on Kirkland’s driving licence.
