Former Celtic defender Mikael Lustig has officially retired from football after 18 years as a player.

Joining from Rosenborg, Lustig featured for the Hoops between 2011 and 2019. He won eight top-flight titles, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups.

In the 2016-17 season the now 35-year-old was part of the team that went undefeated in domestic competitions under Brendan Rodgers.

After leaving Parkhead he played for Belgian side Gent before joining AIK in his homeland.

The defender's final match was a 2-0 loss to Elfsborg in which his team-mate, fellow former Celt John Guidetti, was sent off for two bookable offences. His side finished fifth in the Allsvenskan this term.

Celtic tweeted their recognition after Lustig's final match, posting: "Best of luck in your retirement, Mikael."

Lustig himself said of Celtic ahead of his retirement: "The bond that I have with the club and the supporters and all the team-mates that I played with... I'm really happy for that. I'm looking forward to the future and hopefully I can be in Glasgow soon."
