A GLASGOW councillor embroiled in a racism row, suspended amid a probe into her social media activity, has quit Scottish Labour.

Audrey Dempsey, member for Springburn/Robroyston, had proposed a question asking about "racist attacks on white children in Glasgow schools".

Her social media then came under scrutiny and comments about asylum seekers receiving preferential treatment looked into.

Liking tweets linked to a far right group also brought further attention.

After Labour moved to suspend her from the council group she has now announced she has resigned from the party.

Speaking to Glasgow podcast Blethered, she said she had written to the business manager on March 1, asking for a meeting to discuss her position.

She said she had no political background and had a community background.

The councillor said she was “totally unfamiliar with the ways and the working” of the council and had asked for support.

She said she had a presentation she made “ripped apart” by colleagues and developed “imposter syndrome”.

On reports she had liked tweets from the Homeland Party, she said she liked tweets that offered her support following the suspension without knowing who they were from.

Dempsey added: “I had no knowledge of the Homeland Party. My politics goes as far as what I’m dealing with in Glasgow. It’s Labour, Tory, SNP and Greens."

She said: “My naivety is in full play here ... I’m not a politician, I’m a community person.”

“I do not support far-right people ... If I had any knowledge of the Homeland Party and what it stood for, I wouldn't have liked the tweets.”

She claimed not to have known she liked one stating “Anas Sarwar was anti-white”.

She has also been removed from two influential council committees this week.

Dempsey was on the Integration Joint Board which oversees health and social care in the city, dealing with some of the most vulnerable people and also responsible for services like homelessness and drug and alcohol policies.

Dempsey has also lost her membership of the Wellbeing Equalities Community Culture and Engagement Committee.

Jon Molyneux, Greens councillor, also on the Integration Joint Board, said: “Having articulated clearly racist views and supported vile conspiracies, it is right that councillor Dempsey has been removed from all her appointed roles, including on the IJB which oversees services for vulnerable people and people seeking asylum.

“Labour has moved quickly once this recent incident was made public but clearly councillor Dempsey’s former colleagues have known the kind of views she has been supporting and expressing for some time and they need to address why action wasn’t taken earlier and how she ever passed the party’s vetting procedures.”
