JOBHUNTERS from all over Inverclyde flocked to a jobs fair at Greenock Town Hall as they looked to advance their careers. 

Hundreds of people keen to get into training and employment filled the venue for the event on Friday.

A queue of eager jobhunters formed at the door of the main hall in preparation for the start of the information-packed morning. 

Representatives from local and national companies were on hand to provide people of all ages and levels of experience with information on training and employment opportunities.

The event was organised by Inverclyde Council in partnership with Skills Development Scotland, and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). 

Councillor Michael McCormick said he was pleased to see such a strong turnout. 

He said: "These events are really helpful, and you can see from they number of people here today that they're really popular. 

"They present people with a lot of opportunities to come and meet different employers and form points of contact. 

"It's a very worthwhile event and hopefully it will lead to a lot of positive destinations for people."

Councillor Jim Clocherty added: "It's been a fantastic turnout today, and it's been great to see so many New Scots here.

"I'd like to thank all of the employers who took the time to set up their stalls. 

"Hopefully the event will lead to people getting into employment."

Monica Leslie of the DWP told the Tele the event would support people at different stages of their career. 

She added: "It gives people the opportunity to get in front of employers and ask questions about the recruitment process. 

"Some people might be thinking about training, some may be thinking about changing their career completely. 

"It's about helping people become 'job ready', and helping them take steps to improve their lives by getting into employment."

Stephen Docherty, training and recruitment manager at McGill's, was there to provide help and advice. 

He said: "It's good to speak about the vacancies and opportunities we have for people in Inverclyde. 

"It's been really busy and we've had a lot of uptake from people already."

Dales Marine Services Limited health and safety advisor Charles Connaghan and apprentice Joseph Milloy enjoyed meeting local people keen to get involved in the business. 

Charles said: "It's so important for us to work with the community and get as many local people involved in the business as possible. 

"Joseph is a great example of the success of our apprenticeship scheme with Inverclyde Council."
