A TALENTED couple have showcased a stunning collection of their work at Gourock’s newest pop-up shop.

Married duo Deborah Murdoch and Garth Ivan’s works have been enjoyed by people across the globe, but last week locals got a look too as the pair showed off some of their best pieces at Med’s Pop Up Shop on Kempock Street.

American photographer Garth, whose works were featured in last year’s Scottish Portrait Awards, told the Telegraph he was delighted to be teaming up with international jeweller Deborah, who is from Greenock.

The pair, who have been married for almost five years, say they enjoy displaying their pieces together.

Greenock Telegraph:

Garth said: “In a lot of the shops the focus is mostly on the jewellery because that’s the business we’re trying to build, so it’s nice to get some of my work up on the walls too.

“It’s so nice to be part of this community because Gourock in particular has become this sort of artistic hub and it’s nice to be able to fit into it.

“Kempock Street is blowing up at the moment, you’ve got a lot of pop-up shops, artists and painters. There’s some really cool stuff.

“Everyone supports each other and helps get the word out.

“It’s good for Deborah to be here as well, she deals in beautiful 18 carat gold and curated stones and there’s something about that you need to see in person.

“To have this chance to put it in front of folk is really good.”

Greenock Telegraph:

Pieces from some of Garth’s previous exhibitions were on display, as well as pictures from a new project he’s working on, ‘liturgy of the moons’.

The series gives human form to some of our solar systems moons, depicting them in a striking and imposing fashion that is a departure from Garth’s other works.

His partner Deborah displayed her own creations, including pieces from her new ‘cloud collection’ range.

She said: “I’ve been working on a new range called the cloud collection, it’s basically big, semi-precious stones, mostly moss agates.

“There are like little worlds in the moss agates, but they remind me of clouds as well.

“This is a great space for us to collaborate and our work goes really well together, with my contemporary jewellery and your fine art photography.

Greenock Telegraph:

“We’ve met some really nice people this week and we’ve had a lot of support from local artists.

“We’ve got studios in Greenock on Terrace Road and that’s locked up to the public, with the pop-up shops we get the chance to show it.

“You find inspiration in all kinds of places, Garth will help me a lot too with the photographs.

“We’ll go up in the hills and take pictures of the jewellery on models.

“It’s just great working together in a place like this.”

Deborah will be returning for another pop-up at the shop between September 2 and 8 this year and readers can find out more about her work at www.deborahmurdoch.com.

Garth is currently working on an exhibition entitled 'The Artists & Craftsmen of Inverclyde', which celebrates the 'hidden artistic wealth of talent' of the area.
