A young couple are to finally have a honeymoon after winning £1 million and a dream holiday to Australia in the new EuroMillions Mega Friday draw.

David and Sam Mackie, who have two young sons, married two and a half years ago but have not been able to take a holiday abroad or have a honeymoon. Their last holiday was a week in Cornwall.

Now, the family from Basingstoke, Hampshire, are applying for passports for Mrs Mackie, a 28-year-old dental nurse, and the two boys to enable them to travel to the other side of the world after becoming the first winners of the new monthly prize draw.

Mr Mackie, an IT manager, said: "This is an amazing opportunity and the more we found out about the trip, the more we realised what a big deal it was. I have been to Australia a couple of times but recently only got abroad for stag weekends. Sam has only ever been on a plane to Leeds, it really is a once in a lifetime chance and I already have the forms to apply for passports for Sam and our boys."

The 32-year-old added: "We looked at (Las) Vegas for our honeymoon but it is tricky saving money for holiday with a young family and we never managed to go. We are really family-orientated and now being able to share this trip with our children will be even better."

He added the couple were planning to spend their winnings by buying a house for their expanding family - Mrs Mackie is currently on maternity leave.

The win comes after a chance purchase on Friday evening when Mr Mackie opened his computer and found the National Lottery website on the screen.

Although his wife usually gets the tickets, he decided to get one for the EuroMillions draw. The next morning he received an email saying he had good news and he should check his account.

Mr Mackie said: "I usually joke that I am off to check my million when I get the email, but this time I didn't. I just said to Sam I was off to look at my £3."

After logging on, Mr Mackie checked his balance which was the same as the day before and wondered where the win was and said that it took him time to spot the message saying he had won £1 million and a private island getaway.

He said: "I called my wife but she didn't believe me. Once she saw my face, and I think I was shaking by this point, she decided to check. We both logged off and back on again to the account and the message was still there. I then had to wait 15 minutes to call Camelot and that was when it started becoming real."

The couple have already signed the paperwork towards buying a house on a new development which they had already considered buying but had been unable to afford previously.

Mr Mackie said: "They had been going quickly and there were only a few plots left. Luckily the one we wanted was still available and we got it. It is amazing to be in that position. I stress about mortgages and money and it is completely life-changing to not to have to worry any longer."

The EuroMillions Mega Friday draw on October 31, saw 25 guaranteed millionaires made in the UK who each all also won a private island getaway. The special prize draw will take place on the last Friday of each month.

The getaway will see the winner and seven friends fly business class to Australia before a helicopter transfer to Makepeace Island on Australia's Sunshine Coast. There they will experience 14 nights of pure indulgence with their own private chef, personal spa treatments and a sunset cruise.
