Scotland is on course to register the hottest day of the year on Friday, experts warned.

The country has been sizzling in hot weather with highs over 25C and is set to experience even higher temperatures, potentially reaching peaks of 28C.

On Thursday, the mercury hit 25.6C in Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway,  the highest temperature registered in 2021 since June.

However, STV meteorologist Sean Batty says the mercury might hit another record on Friday.

In a tweet, he said: “On course for today to be the hottest day of the year so far with Aberdeenshire already around 24C.

“Sorry Ayrshire, looks like you’re going to lose the 2021 hotspot title.”

On Thursday, the meteorologist said many parts of the country were experiencing the warmest day of the year so far, with Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway, recording the highest temperature at 25.6C.

“That’s equal to our record so far for 2021, recorded in Prestwick at the start of June,” he said. “This is in stark contrast to today’s high of just 14C in the Isle of Harris.”

However, Mr Batty warned, parts of Scotland will see some outbreaks of rain.

“The weather is set to stay settled and warm for the foreseeable as high pressure settles over the country,” he said, “but as is normally the case in Scotland, there are exceptions to the fine weather.

“It looks like the far north and west will see a lot of cloud coming and going over the next few days with outbreaks of rain, especially on Sunday.

“The best of the sunshine and highest temperatures will be in southern and eastern parts of the country.

“I think Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perthshire, Fife and Edinburgh will see the highest temperatures through the weekend with a possibility of peaking around 28C in a few spots, especially away from the coasts.

Mr Batty also urged Scots to take care in the sun.

“Those out enjoying the sunshine at the weekend should remember that UV levels are very high at this time of year, and burn time is around 20 minutes, so please wear a high factor lotion.”
