HEAVY rain is set to batter parts of Scotland in the coming days bringing a risk of flooding and travel disruption.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for Wednesday and Thursday.

It covers a huge area of South Scotland, stretching from Kelso to Girvan, and forecasters have said that there is a small chance of business and buildings being flooded as well as "fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life".

The Met Office warning said: “Rain will become persistent and heavy at times on Wednesday across much of southwestern Scotland and parts of the Borders.

“Whilst there still some uncertainty in the exact location of the heaviest rainfall, accumulations of 25 to 50 mm are likely in the warning area, and perhaps 60 to 90 mm over high ground.

“Bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer and spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer.”

Rail services have begun issuing warnings in light of the Met Office announcement with train journeys expected to be impacted by the weather alongside vehicles travelling on busy roads.

Scotrail said: “Heavy rain and high winds have been forecast over the next few days. If you're travelling.

“Speed restrictions might mean your journey takes longer than is usual.”

The Met Office warning will remain in place for all of Wednesday and Thursday, but the chaos should settle in Scotland by Friday with only northern England being given an extension of heavy rainfall and flooding.
