You may know him as a bus magnate, but Sir Brian Souter CA is set to become Vice-President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) next month, putting the chairman and co-founder of the £2bn Stagecoach Group in line to become the Institute's President in 2017.

Sir Brian qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 1984 after training with Arthur Andersen in Glasgow. Sir Brian said: "This is a unique opportunity for me to repay some of the debt I owe to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland for the excellent training I received as a young man and I hope I will be able to encourage more young people to enter the profession.

"Since I have always enjoyed working with numbers and dealing with people, my choice or vocation as a Chartered Accountant seemed logical."

If elected (a shoo-in surely), it is likely that he will succeed the current Deputy President, Jim Pettigrew CA, and the current Vice-President, Ken McHattie CA, to become ICAS President in April 2017.

The coveted IoD Scotland director of the year awards made last week honoured some well known faces. The top prize, to IoD Scotland Director of the Year (over £35m turnover) went to Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive, Edinburgh Airport for his "motivational leadership, strong focus on customer service, improved infrastructure and the introduction of new routes". Winner in the up to £35m turnover category was Ronnie Wayte, of funeral planners Golden Charter
