Jeffrey Meek’s splendid article on the road to enlightenment for LGBTI people was perhaps a little undercut by the large main photograph accompanying it, which depicted a man wearing lipstick and painting his face (Out of the closet ... in from the cold, Essay of the week, November 29).

Such an image has nothing to do with the vast majority of gay men and recycles a ridiculing stereotype from pre-enlightenment times.
