NOT for the first time, the latest being BBC Alba's Benny, a documentary on the life of Benny Lynch broadcast on December 29, the media perpetuates the myth that the great Gorbals fighter was Scotland's first World Champion, when that honour belongs to Johnny Hill of Strathmiglo, who was generally recognised as World Flyweight Champion from August 1928 until his untimely death in Edinburgh in September 1929 at the age of 23.

To claim that he was Scotland's first world crown winner does, of course, add colour to the tragic story of Lynch's life, which has attracted dramatic attention down the years, but does not alter the fact that Hill preceded him.
