CHEERED by the initiative of William Rimmer to offer 78rpm records as a stimulus to dementia sufferers ("Old 78s soothe dementia patients", The Herald, January 4), and although a mere 70 myself, I hope when my turn comes someone may notice my request for a 78 rpm Linguaphone introduction to German.

Could there also be a turntable capable of 16 rpm, so that one hears the delicious prolonged generation of each consonantal cluster of "In dem wohnzimmer ist die familie Schneider" climaxing in "die tochter Lili. Sie liest ein bu-u-u-ch-ch-ch." The last sentence at 16 rpm read by a deep-voiced male had me rolling on the floor, as a youth of some 17 summers. Try this exercise yourselves, dear readers. Guaranteed to clear the tubes, and trigger a host of memories.
