I NOTE Neil Shepherd’s letter (October 16) suggesting that the Scottish Government embark on a project “to restore the Caledonian forest and fill our land with trees again”.

He is of course right but I suggest that he looks up “Woodland expansion across Scotland” on the Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) website describing the “Government’s vision to expand our woodlands to cover 21 per cent of Scotland’s land area by 2032”. Whether that is ambitious enough in the context of the land that is available and suitable I do not know. Let us hope so.

Mr Shepherd would also be directed to the sites describing the work of a number of organisations including the Woodland Trust and Reforesting Scotland. Given that he mentions in particular the restoration of the Caledonian Forest I assume he will find of particular interest the work of Trees for Life, being “the only organisation specifically dedicated to restoring the Caledonian Forest in the Scottish Highlands”.

By the way, he would, I suspect, also be interested in Scotland’s National Peatland Plan also to be found on the SNH site. Indeed, I would hope that any readers concerned about the consequences of climate change would follow up on my foregoing suggestions.
