I AGREE with Dave Biggart’s comments (Letters, October 16) about Iran. I’ve visited several times for work, and my wife and I had a fantastic holiday there a couple of years ago. Isfahan and Shiraz are beautiful, and Persepolis is a magnificent site. Like Mr Biggart, we found the Iranians to be friendly, hospitable and charming. The guy who showed us round the old US Embassy even apologised for some of the signs we were about to see that labelled the UK as Little Satan.

I’ve visited Saudi Arabia on many occasions, too. There’s not the same history or cultural depth as in Iran, and the public atmosphere is quite grim and oppressive. However, in private I’ve met many Saudis who have also been friendly, hospitable and charming. People are people wherever you go in the world, and the different atmosphere is imposed by the Saudi leadership. Political leaders have a lot to answer for, and not just here in the UK.

Finally, I thank Mr Biggart for not mentioning Brexit.
