I COULD not agree more with Irene Woodward (Letters, December 12) about not recognising the names featuring in your Birthdays section.

The same applies to many "celebrity" programmes on TV. We eagerly listen to who the celebrities are going to be – and are usually none the wiser when we hear.

Some puzzle magazines also have crosswords where the shaded squares produce the name of a "celebrity". Again, when solved, we are often at a loss to know who they are. Your correspondent is in her 81st year, I am 87 next month, so I probably have even less knowledge.
