WHILST not politically aligned I have long been an admirer of Dennis Skinner's ability to make memorable comments and it is a pity that he seems to have slipped into simple personal abuse, even if some may consider it to have been true ("Skinner defiant on swear rant", The Herald, December 12). Mr Skinner's best bits, which are abundant and easily found in an internet search, include the many to Black Rod at the opening of Parliament ceremony which presented him with a perfect opportunity in front of an attentive and packed House. He was always able to make a pertinent and incisive point whilst retaining wit and good comic timing.

As good an example as any was recalled about the thoroughly delighted John Major, on succeeding Margaret Thatcher, when, at his first Prime Minister’s Questions, he rose to rousing Tory cheers and in the split-second hush between his MPs falling silent and Mr Major uttering his first words Mr Skinner shouted: "Resign!" Political point made, good timing and mirth round the chamber of the House.
