WILLIAM Scott lives in a frightened state (Letters, January 9). We must have hope, as do the 122 nations that support the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. However important the lives of Allied troops were in the Second World War, there can be no justification for a second nuclear attack on a city and its civilian population.

Britain obtained its nuclear deterrent and made the Firth of Clyde a prime target for attack by such deterrents. No country in the southern hemisphere has nuclear weapons. Which of these are targets for the evil big nine? The self perpetuating state of escalation

must be stopped.
