FURTHER to the Duke of Edinburgh's unfortunate accident and hoping his and the other parties' injuries will make a quick recovery ("Duke shocked, but unhurt, after crash", The Herald, January 18), it appears that one possible cause was the low sunshine perhaps blinding him. We have all experienced this problem at some time and I suppose the older we get, the eyes need all the help they can get.

I have driven for the past 50 years and always drive with at least dipped headlights come rain or in bright sunshine. I would, in fact, make it law that all cars have to use dipped headlights at all times, instead of some of the nearly-useless small side lights or the so-called driving light systems which in many cases do not even put on rear lights. It may well have been, if the other car had had its headlights on, this accident could have been avoided. Motor cycles should also by law have to use headlights. Many drivers seem reluctant to switch on their full lights, even though this additional safety feature is free.

REPORTS that the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh has again been seen behind the wheel on the open road beggar belief. It appears that he has been able to rush through a police eye test which proves he can see; not many would be able to arrange the same so quickly. I am equally willing to bet that anyone else of that age would have been obliged to cease driving and have a full assessment of all of their faculties over and above a simple eye test, prior to getting back behind the wheel. The Duke has many facilities to allow him to drive safely off public roads in the interim prior to any medical and ability-to-drive checks if he is so desperate to drive.

PICTURE the scene. The Princes Charles and Philip are discussing the latter’s recent road accident. As Prince Charles questions whether his father was concentrating sufficiently at the time of the collision, the atmosphere in the room becomes increasingly strained.

Clearly, a case of Duke, heir and a tension.
